Learning on the Baakens Valley Guineafowl Trail

On 13 April 2022, the Khayalethu Boys joined Gladwyn Jackson – Gqeberha Tour Guide and conqueror of both Mount Kilimanjaro and Everest – on the Baakens Valley Guineafowl Trail. The hike was a reward for good behaviour and an opportunity to engender, in our boys, care and appreciation for nature and the outdoors.

The boys thoroughly enjoyed the freedom of walking the trail. They learned about hiking safety and had great fun mastering the use of Mr Jackson’s climbing canes.  

Along the way, they met two tortoises; and learned about endangered species and why tortoises should not be kept as pets.

The boys also experienced first hand the impact of littering and neglect on our city and the environment; and were able to chat to a municipal worker who clears the rubbish dumped in the bush alongside the trail. They came away with a full understanding of the huge environmental problems created by littering and a button to remind them to make a difference by popping rubbish into a bin.

Through experiential learning, we’re able to reach the hearts and minds of our boys and encourage the adoption of positive values and good citizenship. Thank you, Mr Jackson, for the time, effort and care you put into making this an experience to remember.
