THE PROGRAMME

Students specialising in Social Work and related pedagogical fields, such as Social Education, Social Culture and Youth and Child Care, find an internship at ACVV Khayalethu Child and Youth Care Centre to be a unique opportunity to gain valuable practice in their fields while immersing them in the vibrant culture of South Africa.

The programme has space for 4 students in the term beginning January/February 2025, and includes:

  • Housing, electricity, water, housekeeping, security, and wifi
  • The ACVV Khayalethu Child and Youth Care Centre’s Internship Programme
  • Wellness and academic coaching and liaison with lecturers, including scheduled and ad hoc group meetings and the continuous WhatsApp availability of mentor Dr Janin Vansteenkiste.
  • Orientation and background support

Although the Khayalethu International team will provide advice and guidance on the following, they are excluded from the programme, and should be arranged by students individually:

  • Travel, Visas, Travel and Medical Insurance and Vaccinations
  • Local transport and Meals
  • Additional optional activities (for instance, game drives and tours)

PLACEMENTS

In 2025, four students will be placed at ACVV Khayalethu Child and Youth Care Centre. This Centre serves as a home for 35 boys at risk, ranging from six to 21 years old. Our primary objective is to nurture these young individuals physically, emotionally, and intellectually, fostering their development into responsible and productive members of society. By providing a safe haven, we remove them from the perils of crime, abuse, and poverty, offering them a renewed opportunity to realise their full potential.
